Say NO to violence against women

Here is another article from a guest writer on the blog. I personally felt this needed to be shared here, to join in creating an awareness. Nowadays female molestation and violence has become a trend, making waves and spreading like wildfire.Even kids are being molested, I believe in the cause to rise against violating the female folks. We have a right to our own freedom of movement in the society. Read what Oyindamola has to say...

Violence is no doubt one of the biggest threats to the peaceful co-existence of the human gender; males and females. It has eaten deep into the structure of the society and glaringly, the consequences has proven to be catastrophic as well as posing setbacks for societal growth. Violence is nothing short of a tender subject. From time immemorial, research has shown that a larger percentage women; both young and old are exposed to violence.

It is heartrendingly sad when females suffer at the hands of beasty men. It is now a norm to hear of men beating their wives to the point of being comatose, extreme cases of death has also been recorded. This act has even gone beyond the family unit.

Majority of the female folks anywhere around the world are physically molested. What can be done to put a stop to this evil?

Whoever is the perpetrator of physical violence, whether male relatives or not, should be apprehended and brought to book. Men should be civilised enough to prove their ideals by using their brains not their brawn when they are angered.

Another form of violence females suffer, is sexual exploitation. A closer look at this will show you , that a considerable percentage of the victims of rape and other related crimes are young females; most of whom are not mature enough both physically and mentally to be having sexual intimacy with the opposite sex. Also, verbal abuse should not be overlooked. Issuing threats and badmouthing the female gender is uncalled for as well. Put your brain and the gift of words you have to other honourable tasks. Why should you destabilize a woman's emotions by the hurtful and threatening statements you utter? This is totally barbaric.

Women everywhere in the world are not at total ease. The fear of being sexually exploited, physically assaulted and emotionally threatened has succeeded not only in ruining their lives but also ruling the hearts. Even if domestic violence doesn't happen to them directly, what about their friends and families, daughters, sisters or their co-worker or even someone in their immediate or external environment?

The concept of women being weaker vessels has been totally misunderstood and this has somehow contributed to their undoing and how they are treated in the society by men. In fact, some cultures applaud this as they regard men as gods whose actions can't be questioned.

All forms of violence against women should not only be tackled but measures must be put in place to get it eliminated from the society. Women should not be enslaved, nor forced to do backbreaking work or jobs. They should not be turned into objects that gratify sexual pleasures against their wills. All hands must be on deck to trample on all forms of violence the female community faces. We needn't be pushed before we respond to this clarion call. The aftermath of this vices are clear enough and devastating for all to see. Female victims of violence are not the same anymore after incidence. They become traumatised and this affects all aspects of their lives to the extent that - their output to the growth of the society lowers. Young children who are raised or reared in such societies internalise and view violence as a necessary evil for all women, these future leaders see domestic violence as a fate that cannot be rejected or avoided. The male ones among them believe it is part of their destiny to inflict pains on the ‘weaker vessels’ and they will, without doubt, continue the mandate throughout their existence on the surface of the earth. Any religion which approves violence against women is worthy of extinction and the society should stop downplaying the constitutional rights of a woman. Women should not be seen as "lesser humans".

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an annual event. Let every soul keep sustaining this cry - "Say No to Violence against Women" till it is no more heard of in our land. Let the arms of law be long enough to prosecute the perpetrators of violence against women, be it male or female.

Theoretically and practically, our laws should be no respecter of persons – irrespective of Position or affiliations.
To everyone out there – Let’s protect the weaker vessels. To men - the female gender should not be subjected to your inanities. They are humans as you are and are not by any means lesser. To women - refuse to be the whipping post for anyone's whim. Liberate yourselves, seek for help and speak out whenever you are in pains or you face any threat from any angle. Be your sister's keeper, don't become a perpetrator of violence against that ‘feminist’ which you represent. The Creator didn't intend women to be pummeled, rubbished or dastardised. Our destiny is far greater than that.
Lend your voice and resources to this cause – the elimination of violence against women. It's high time we stood up against all barbaric acts facing the women in our society lest we collapse under the crumbling weight of those beastly acts rampaging our environment.

leadership and liberty forum 2016

So on the 3rd of NOV 2016, Moronfolu Adeniyi sent me the link to the leadership and liberty forum (lalf) 2016. I opened the link and came to realize this particular gathering was really going to make sense. I became more anxious , expectant and excited when I realized I would be taking a session on Time management and leadership (leadership 101). Despite busy schedules and distance barrier, about forty participants and facilitators found their way to Royal green’s guest house Ibara Abeokuta on November 5th, 2016.

African student for liberty organization is an organization I have always respected and being indirectly a part of ,by this I mean I didn’t officially join while in school. Apart from the fact that these organization helps to discover and groom intellectuals. It is an organization comprising of ardent believers of liberty, freedom and leadership. They are a group of achievers who never act limited or limit themselves for no reason.

So as I listened to other speakers after giving my presentation on time management and leadership, I realized I had made a great choice agreeing to be in that event, I also concluded that there is big hope for Nigeria. Meeting young people with so much zeal, passion and intelligence for a course really challenged me and motivated me.

ASFL’s West Africa Regional director who is the host, Moronfolu Adeniyi spoke on ‘Promoting Liberty on African Campuses’. He highlighted some of the gains recorded so far as well as the adjoining challenges in the cause of advancing liberty across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Moronfolu ended by narrating his experience as a student and how he and his team were able to surmount several obstacles from their school management in getting the organization established on their campus. He energized participants to be focused and determined pro-liberty advocates.

Lilian David, Another ASFL Executive Board Member talked extensively on ‘Benchmark of Successful Events/Projects’. To organize successful events, she identified and explained three strategies that student leaders can employ, which are: Coordination, Supervision, and Teamwork. She also shared possible events that can be organized by ASFL leaders, especially on campuses.

Former ASFL Executive Board member, Odunola Oladejo a very vibrant lady and John Aiyede (vice president of  ALSO, University of Ibadan) shared insights on ‘Free Speech and Campus Regulations’. Odunola being a lawyer gave more insight on how free a speech is and when one is beginning to cross one's boundaries.

SFL African Programs Manager, Olumayowa Okediran gave a broad introduction of ASFL to the participants. He explained how governments enact laws to infringe on individual rights and in turn hamper social freedom. He shared his experiences in the liberty movement and informed the participants about the ‘No Nanny Campaign’, a global SFL campaign that is identifying and reproving laws that are infringing on individual rights, and plans to integrate it into subsequent programs of ASFL. Really there are certain laws that are ridiculous in different parts of the countries. Why would the government decide for you where to park your cars on certain days? What to wear on certain days?

Azeez Alamutu spoke on financial discipline and fundraising. He made a statement which I quite agree with, "if you can't manage time, you can't be trusted with money".

I had invited one of my friends (dr Tolu Apampa) specially to the event, it was to be more of a re-union for both of us but alas we actually had to squeeze out time to talk. My point is, my friend and I got so involved in the interesting activities and presentations at the event such that we eventually left the venue later than planned .

LALF 2016 was a success and ASFL needs to be proud of this. The presence of experienced and well travelled personnel coupled with the ideas they shared further proved that these are people ready to matter to their environment. These are people who may never be relegated to the background, people who one way or the other are related to the rising and greatness of Nigeria. My presentation that day inspired even me and that’s what a great gathering does, it creates a good atmosphere for inspirations and ideas. An atmosphere to connect , relate and take opportunities and this is what I appreciate student for liberty (SFL) for.

Madrid derby

Real Madrid has not beaten Atletico Madrid in the league since the days of Jose Mourinho. Real Madrid has a bad record against Atletico Madrid with only 1 win the last 10 games. Last season, Zidane lost at home to Atletico but since then till now, Real Madrid has gotten 63 points. Zidane on last season’s defeat said yesterday: “I remember the defeat. It always hurts, but I’m not thinking about that game. I’m thinking about tomorrow and we will try to do the best to win".

Though, Real Madrid has
not played fascinating football much this season, they are winning. They are going into the game with 2 points ahead of Barcelona and another 6 ahead of Atletico Madrid. A win for Real Madrid will keep them on top of the league and with a difficult match out of their way. Knowing this, Real Madrid might feel this is their season to take.

At the end of this season, Atletico Madrid will quit their stadium Vicente Caldrone and will move to a 67, 000 capacity stadium, “La Peineta”. So, they might want to go into the game with a fire for fire determination, considering this is their last derby match on the stadium. Aside from this, they could be nine points behind Real Madrid if they loss this afternoon. Without being in December yet, a loss might make Atletico feel they are out of the title race. Atletico Madrid have played well this season but they have lost some unexpected matches. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid is a good team defensively. They are capable of nullifying Real Madrid’s attack. Ronaldo has failed to score in his last six Madrid derbies. Bale has only one goal against Atletico, scoring an extra time goal in the Champions League final in 2014, but they have little struggle in front of goal.
However, Atletico has their own worries too, conceding in their last four games and two loses in their last three La Liga game. They also have injury worries, their central defender Savic is ruled out of the derby. Good news for them, Griezmann has overcome a foot injury and will be available for the derby match. Zidane on his country man, Griezmann: “It is true that we have to be very careful against Griezmann…”
Alvaro Morata and Toni Kroos are out but Karim Benzema and Luka Modric are expected to feature in the big game today. Still, Real Madrid are missing Casemiro in the midfield. In defence, Pepe is out due to hamstring injury but Ramos returns.
Over time, Ramos has proven himself to be a force to reckon with. The defender and captain has scored 3 out of 12 games in Madrid derbies plus an equalizer 2014 Champions League final.
Positively, for Real Madrid, they have a record of11 games without conceding a goal before the international break and also unbeaten in all competitions playing 28 game. Zidane on the game: “…it’s a 50-50 game. We have to go and play until the end. It will be a tough game, but we’re used to tough games.

Big weekend

Truly, English Premiere League football has proven itself not to be a game played on paper. When Manchester United appointed Jose Mourinho, he was happy and full of confidence but recently he is sad and simmering with anger. His summer transfer signings have not been effective enough this season.

After having a bad game against Manchester city, Jose Mourinho has hardly given last season’s Bundesliga best player, Mkhitaryan the time to play. On Saturday, Manchester United will be without key man Zlatan Ibrahimovich ,when Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger renew their fierce rivalry. Zlatan Ibrahimovich is out due to a match, since he got banned for collecting five yellow cards.
Mourinho’s team have been suffering from injuries, with Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia on sideline. Also, Luke Shaw might not play, he is injury prone. Mourinho already criticized him and Chris Smalling for not being fit for their match against Swansea, saying: “we have players with problems.” Manchester United has won only one out of their last four games in the league. For most people, Jose Mourinho has lost it. He is no longer the “special one”. He has even lost his level of arrogance, especially with the media.
For Mourinho’s squad, Michael Carrick seems to be the missing puzzle. His introduction to the team this season has brought stability. Michael Carrick is a silent player on the pitch but he contributes greatly to the team. He is experienced, composed and well positioned on the field. I would be surprised not to see him play.

Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger will be facing a different Jose Mourinho this season, “the unhappy one”. Probably, this is the best time for Arsene Wenger to record his first competitive win against Mourinnho after 13 meetings between them. Arsenal are fourth on the table and are enjoying a good start to the league campaign. Man United are six points behind Arsenal on the table, who are two points behind league leaders Liverpool. Arsene Wenger’s men are unbeaten after losing to Liverpool in the opening day of the season.
Arsenal has injury problems too; Hector Bellerin is out and Arsenal’s big name and front man Alexis Sanchez is skeptical to feature in the match dolden opportunity for Frenchman, Olivier Giroud who has found himself more on the bench this season.

BOTH TEAM STAT:
Manchester United, won 94 games against Arsenal, drawn 49 and have lost 80.

Arsenal has found the net in each of their last five games against Manchester United.

Arsenal haven’t beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford in the league since 2006.

However, this is not a game played on paper. May the best team win.

Brief Psychotic disorder

Few years back, on a normal afternoon, I was returning home from school. I was on my normal route and I wasn’t expecting anything out of the blues to happen. I boarded a cab and was seated at the backseat adjacent to the left door, with an elderly woman in between me and another woman sitting right adjacent to the right door. Barely 15 minutes after the cab moved, it stopped to drop the woman seated close to the right door and pick another passenger. One would have thought that the new passenger would simply come in and the cab will move on but alas the elderly woman beside me alighted and ordered the new passenger to go in and sit in the middle while she seats by the door.
Everyone, including the new passenger, thought it was ridiculous, as she had no reason for getting down. We tried to tell her same but she vehemently refused. Perhaps she insisted because of a delusion she has e.g the seat is her right because she owns the air above that seat; she is not supposed to sit in between 2 people because she is a god or something. What started out as a minor quarrel turned out to be a fight, the cab man got down angrily trying to settle the issue, but we gradually noticed that the elderly woman’s words and behavior was incoherent, she wasn’t making much sense and she was even ready to pull off her clothes.

This went on until a passerby came around to advise us to leave the woman and move on because she wasn’t normal and was known in those parts to display such occasional ‘madness’. This woman was well dressed and one couldn’t have guessed.

A friend of mine shared his experience as well; he was travelling to Delta state from Berger, Lagos. The bus had moved and a young lady had offered to pray for the journey in the bus. She had started well, saying powerful prayers and everyone had been responding with a resounding Amen until suddenly, her prayers transformed to curses. She began to curse the same set of people she had said prayers for, everyone in the buswas alarmed and when they tried to stop her, they realized she was mentally unhinged. She was beautiful, according to him, and well dressed. To his surprise, she had transformed from a well comported enthusiastic Christian to a confused and violent person. The situation degenerated to the point where everyone in the bus insisted the driver had to drop her off or else they wouldn’t continue with the journey. Of course she refused to get down from the bus and it took extra efforts, time and tact to quietly deceive her off the bus. The other passengers had been made to get down and wait at a particular destination while the driver and my friend pretended to continue the journey with her. They were later able to drop her off within Lagos, before going back to get the other passengers and continue with the journey.

The examples of the elderly woman and the young lady fit the description of a brief psychotic disorder. Brief psychotic disorder is a sudden short term display of psychotic behavior, such as hallucinations or delusions which occurs following a stressful event in an otherwise normal individual. It is currently classified within the schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. It is differentiated from other related disorders by its sudden onset, its relatively short duration which is usually less than a month, and in some cases, few days or hours. It is usually characterized by one or more of the following symptoms.
Delusions

Hallucinations

Bizarre behavior and posture

Disorganized speech

Due to the sudden onset and brief duration some might argue that these things are spiritual and therefore, should be treated spiritually. I believe that there are times medical treatment is required and this is one condition that requires it. As is the case with mental disorders, support from loved ones and family also help the victims to recover and cope with this condition.

This mental disorder is very different from full blown psychosis. There are lots of mental disorders that many individuals within the society are secretly going through. But nobody knows, nobody cares until it becomes a societal problem affecting others around. The risk factors for developing brief psychotic disorder, like other mental disorders, can mainly be grouped as biological, psychological and social. Biological factors such as genetics, head trauma, alcohol/illicit drug use, radiation exposure etc; Psychological factors such as childhood abuse and/or neglect, personality types, exposure to mental illness in close relatives etc; social factors such as poverty, poor performance at work/school, loss of a loved one etc.
Most mental disorders are never fully cured, but providing a strong support team of medical and mental health professionals for victims is usually helpful to help improve their quality of life.

Victims of Psychological ailments can be helped to get over it by

Helping them re-live only good memories,

helping them redirect their thoughts through gentle discussion

Friends and relatives must avoid playing along with their delusions, do not be confrontational or harsh with them. Be gentle and honest with them but do not talk about the disorder in a way that implies mental illness is something to be ashamed of.

Use of appropriate medications as prescribed by a qualified mental health care practitioner.

Also all situations respond to prayers and prayers work wonders.

All in all, since we cannot deny that there are people like this in our midst, therefore we cannot ignore them or assume they are of less importance. We can only do our best to help the ones around us. After all statistics suggests that over 1million individuals in the society may at least have one hidden mental disorder they are battling. In other words, everyone needs care, help and acceptance.

Memoirs of a Plateau corper

I may not be able to write a diary of a Plateau corper, but I can share some of the memories I had while in Plateau…..
On getting to Akwanga there was something strange and different about the environment.
I felt it physically and psychologically that I was out of my comfort zone and region. It was almost as if I was out of Nigeria. I know that sounds funny but it is true. We got to the place popularly called Forest, it was the entrance into Plateau state and I immediately knew without doubt how the place had really earned its name. The trees were so tall and much and the whole place as beautiful as it was, was scary.

Journeying through the roadblocks and barricades got me thinking, Nigeria has still not gotten over war threats and situations, why else would every checkpoint in the north resemble an hideout, soldier’s camp or roadblock. We got to Marraba Jama at around quarter to 12 midnight and our driver stopped the bus, saying he couldn’t take us further.
He claimed he had passengers going into JOS therefore we had to find our way to camp. It was like a big blow and we thought he was joking, when we saw that he was truly serious about leaving us there, we began to argue.

We were just 8 corps members yet our voices could be heard from far distance.

How could he have said he was going to leave us behind? We knew nowhere in Jos for christ’s sake. It was later when we refused to keep quiet that he saw another vehicle and made an exchange of passengers with the driver. Promising to take all of the driver’s passengers going into Jos town while the other driver took us to camp. Unknown to us, he refused to pay the driver yet he must have collected money from the driver’s passengers.

When we got to NYSC camp gate, another struggle ensued as the driver insisted on collecting money from us. We refused to pay, telling him we had already paid for our tickets from Ibadan were we took off but the man wouldn’t listen.. in the end the soldiers at the gate had to intervene.

The cold that had hit us on entering into the north was nothing compared to the Plateau cold. It was a serious one. My teeth was keying into each other and my jaw clenched like someone affected by spasms.
The soldiers had checked us in as we had our credentials with us and we had been led to a female hostel to sleep. The bed was bare, no bedsheet , no nothing. My luggage which contained my blanket, cardigan and other cold kit had been separated from me, everything about this transport company had turned out to be error! First our luggage had been transferred into a bigger bus, they claimed was meant for luggages. Second the driver ditched us in the middle of nowhere .

I fell into a fitful sleep, I kept turning and tossing and I knew that if not because I’d travelled a long way, I wouldn’t have been able to close my eyes at all, The cold was terrible. By next morning I was as cold as frozen fish.

A lot of people had arrived by morning and the camp was totally full. It was in the morning in broad daylight that I was able to appreciate that camp. Plateau is beautiful. The hills were so magnificent and one would be tempted to climb it, Of course I did climb Mangu hills, the one inside camp towards the later end of camp. Lool...

Our luggage had to be checked and we were still waiting for ours. We were sent out of the camp again to wait for our luggage. That first day in camp I saw several primary school mates and secondary school mates that I hadn’t seen since we were kids. NYSC really does has its benefits even if it s minimal. The weeks that followed in camp was full of excitement, joy, stress, weariness, pain, disappointments, fear and uncertainty.

Excitement and joy as a result of the new friends I made, several activities that took place although I didn’t attend most of them but I got to listen to gists.
Early morning parades and funny soldiers/ instructors. The new places and scenes in camp, the joy of being somewherelse asides the west. I also loved the evening fellowships it made me feel at home and I loved holding hands and singing the family song.

Stress and weariness; if you ask me, NYSC camp was created to stress every Nigerian youth out! It was parades and boring lectures back to back, one hardly had time to sleep. You had to hustle for water, hustle for food , hustle for space etc, one even had to hustle to bath or use the toilet! That’s during the few times the toilet was a bit clean.

Pain; several times we had to serve punishment as a result of poor hygiene, after inspections. I will never forget the days we were told to squat down and yansh up for hours. Yes the punishment is demonstrated exactly has it sounds and believe me, its some of the worse punishments ever. Several curses fly in the air whenever it is being served.

There were days of terrible rains and the weather was always often harsh. From extreme hotness to extreme coldness, one begins to wonder which to desire. No hot balm could quench the cold when it started and as for the hotness of the sun, you may not necessarily sweat but you will be in total discomfort as long as you remain in the sun.

I remember one of the rains that fell, my friend Tomisin and I were in one kiosk in the mammy market. We had just ordered food was about to start eating when this rain started, suddenly the wind began to blow it was normal at first then suddenly it was terribly violent, everybody ran , we had barely left our food and table when the ceiling of that particular portion came crashing! It would have crashed on our heads… electric wires flying everywhere we ran to safety as it rained ice and water violently for hours. By the time the rain stopped we were terribly dirty and cold. A lot of corpers had been injured. Some buildings had collapsed some tents as well and even the hostel ceiling had been damaged in some areas.

Disappointments; I had been hoping to join the OBS , showcase my article writing talent and love for media but alas I didn’t even get to d audition. Just because OBS was turned into a political thing that you had to bid for,it became royal inheritance for some people such that you had to know somebody or had to belong to a particular clique before you could even be given an opportunity, I doubt if some people were auditioned or interviewed before they became automatic members sef.

In my platoon as well, during volleyball trials, I was initially chosen but late r bounced out, the trainer had been quick to give up on me saying rudely that I had no fingers for volleyball . imagine the embarrassment. That’s how I was unable to participate in anything on camp. I wasn’t a dancer, a party freak or a fan of immoral activities neither am I an actress. I do not sing or rap, neither do I play football. But I’m glad I got to interview an overaged corper.. it is one of my proud achievements in plateau camp. Read my article on this blog : my interview with an amazing corper

Fear and uncertainty; at some points in camp, we were told that book haram was attacking inside of Jos and somewhere close to Plateau camp, I had to reassure myself no harm was going to come to any of us. I also saw the thick forest surrounding the camp and because of the strange noise often heard from there, I realized that it was possible we had wild animals lurking around. But everyone kept acting and pretending like all is well.

I was also worried whether my relocation was going to pull through. Having stubbornly refused to lie my way through, I had attended the relocation interview telling the panel the real reason I wanted to relocate. Which was to be closer to my father and truth be told, Jos was just too far for me to spend 1yr in. I knew how almost impossible it would be to come home as travelling down itself was so much discomfort. The food was another issue, although I didn’t tell anybody that, but being a picky eater, how was I to cope? I hated the smell of their food and it seemed to me that even their normal rice and pepper or jollof rice was cooked in a different manner.
I would be allowing my friend , fellow writer and blogger Lanre Olaniyi (www.olaniyiolanrewaju.blogspot.com.ng) to continue this piece from here .. yes your guess is right I was relocated to Ibadan but Lanre is amongst the few friends who despite all odds stayed back in plateau….while I got a relocation letter to go back to Ibadan, he got a letter to go to Jos North.

"Leaving camp for Jos North local government was the dream of most corpers. Rumor had it that some gave bribe to be posted to the capital city of Plateau, but I got it without lifting a finger. Nostalgia was a cloak that sent me into thinking about a whole lot of things that happened on camp. Thank God it was over and a new phase of serving the nation was before me. With my bags packed, we journeyed through the mountains to Jos. It was a memorable trip as stones of ice dropped from the skies almost attempting to drill through the glass of the bus.

The first few days in Jos were quite boring as my friends from camp have been scattered all over the state while some others like Browny, relocated to some other states and I had to relate with the corpers that were posted to my place of primary assignment. It was not so hard because we were all living together. Before long, I had new friends.

The first issue attached with relocating to another place was solved, however moving around was still a very restricted thing because I cannot navigate on strange roads where an unknown language is been spoken. So for a long while, I had to stay in the house until I was able to summon courage to go out and get familiar with Jos. Plateau is beautiful in its own way as it is tainted with the traditional sentiments of the people. Different crisis that has killed many and spoilt many things gave birth to two kinds of settlements which is based on religion. Christians and Muslims stayed in separate areas. Till I left Jos 11 months after, I kept on knowing new places and I wish to still go back to Jos. Maybe this time, I will take Browny along.

Jos is an amazing place full of mountains. At any point, it always look like you are coming out of a mountain and you are entering another mountain in front. I wondered how they constructed roads and houses because everywhere is full of big stones. Behind the house where I lived was a very vast, but no so tall mountain. We often climb to go and have fun and sometimes pray. The streams around it served as source of water for washing clothes when we have scarcity of water.

Unlike Ibadan, the major mode of transportation is tricycles called ‘keke napep’. Transportation would have been very easy if the drivers could all speak a little Pidgin English, but some do not understand an atom of English. I boarded some of these with a very fat faith hoping that there will be another passenger that will interpret to Hausa. On one of the occasions, the driver took a route that was different from where I know and I was almost saying my last prayer before I discovered that he doesn’t intend to make a sacrifice out of my scared brain.

Serving in the North has a whole lot of advantages and one of it is the “two minutes ranka dede” we get anytime we go to the market place in the NYSC uniform. It was always a thing to long for as you will be proud that you graduated irrespective of the grade. Education is still regarded as a privilege by a large part of the population of the North which is quite sad.

Life in the North is very different from the West as the people are more united and they relate as if they are of the same family.
For example, getting smaller denominations of money by artisans for their business is very easy as they are all willing to help each other unlike the West where it is very hard before an artisan gets “change”. His friends would not even check their pockets before they give a negative reply. The traditional beliefs of the North make life easier than the West.

After some months, Christmas came and most corpers travelled home leaving behind very few of us. Then, the old famous witch of Plateau jumped out of the forest and stole away the little heat we were managing. The temperature dropped to below 100C. I always had 4 clothes on with gloves, socks and head warmer. Bathing became a dreadful thing and I gladly skipped it for many days.
My memoirs will not be complete if I do not talk about the food.

While on camp, I ate almost every food we were served. One of the food looked like semovita and it was not until the third time

I was eating it that I discovered that it is not semovita, but tuwo. After camp, I set out to taste every new delicacy that comes my way. The first was a form of cake made from corn called ‘masa’. I enjoyed it especially when taken with “suya pepper”. Foods like Kose (bean cake) and Suya (Roast meat) were my regular choice. A very interesting thing about the Plateau meat is that they prefer Dog-meat to beef. To an outsider, the meat does not taste differently, but to them, there is some sort of excited taste they get from dog meat. Kunu (wheat-drink) was always a pleasure anytime I find it available.

After a whole year in Plateau, I felt very reluctant to leave because of the hospitality with which we were treated, but I had to return to the West.

Dry bones

Jummai woke up startled. She had just had a dream. In her dream she had been running alongside some people she recognized as her colleagues then suddenly, she fell but when she did her colleagues did not stop running so she became annoyed in the dream such that she stood up and raced after them. She overtook them in the dream and then she woke up.

Jummai was bothered about the dream, although she had been having problems with her co-workers at work, she never thought it would be as serious as to cause her nightmares. Later on in the day after telling her bosom friend who encouraged her to wave it that it was just her mind playing pranks on her, she felt relieved.

Two weeks later, while rushing to work, Jummai was caught up in a traffic jam which led to her arriving 30mins late to work. Her boss who had been pestering her for an affair didn’t waste time before handing her an indefinite suspension letter. To add insult to her injury, other colleagues including junior workers especially the oga’s secretary just laughed at her saying it served her right.

Jummai cried all the way home, now her fears had been confirmed. Where would she start from. All efforts made by Jummai’s friends to bring her out of her bad state proved abortive. But one day after much persuasion Jummai agreed to follow her friends to the beach. At the beach a young girl of about fifteen years handed Jummai a tract before walking away. It read “DRY BONES SHALL RISE AGAIN”. She read the content but didn’t really meditate on it, it was just a tract she thought.

She kept writing applications but was constantly turned down. One day she remembered her bible and was led to open it. Surprisingly as she opened, she opened to “whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it well”. She then started to think. She had learnt catering earlier on in school. So she returned to church and told them about her ideas they later gave her some money as capital and she started. Anytime she felt like quitting she would remember that Christ never promised us a smooth journey on earth so she forged on until one day she got a contract through the church to bake the cake & pastries to be served at a top notch wedding in the society.

At the wedding, the wife of the Governor who was in attendance liked her snacks and requested to meet her. After listening to her story, the middle aged woman who was after youth empowerment and encouraging entrepreneurship offered to sponsor her opening a big pastries supermarket. Jummai was overjoyed. Her old boss having heard the news apologised and recalled her, back to her job but she refused. She had already stepped up to an higher level. Dry bones surely can rise again.

The Olympics at Rio

Never did I imagine I will be writing on this but then some things just happen because they are bound to happen. I started getting interested in Nigeria’s house ambassadors when my curious friend called my attention to the Nigerian ambassador to the Olympics at Rio. She wanted to know what the ambassador’s role was in Rio, why he was needed if he won’t be directly involved in arranging for venues or making sure the athletes get to the venue in good conditions, what benefits he gets, if this was just a compensation to him for running for president and losing under the ruling party? why he was even associated with sports in the first place, if there are no others who could fit the bill, how much it was costing the government to sponsor him and the athletes, why the Olympics ambassador was not too persistent about athletes’ welfare…..

It was in the bid to find answers to these questions that I realized that Nigeria had financial problems sponsoring the athletes and encouraging the athletes to Rio, yet ambassadors were sponsored to Rio. Perhaps the fate of the Rio team could have been different if a designated fund for an African games held in Congo last year hadn’t been declared missing or embezzled one way or the other.

Sending over 70 athletes to another country with little preparation, the president gave a speech on dwindling revenue and global economic challenges being a factor to the inadequate funding of the trip. But an ambassador who has no link whatsoever to games or sports was sponsored to Rio. Which brings me back to how House Ambassadors in Nigeria came to be. Was it based on influence in the society? Popularity? Did some people bribe their way into the ambassadorial seat just because they needed power and affluence one way or the other? How is it that some set of people get paid and recognized as ambassadors and their impact isn’t felt in and on Nigeria?

Some even have this seat as titles and strength to their political prowess.
When I was younger , I learnt that an ambassador is a trustworthy, deserving and accredited individual who is well learned and vast in knowledge sent by a country as its representative in a foreign country. Ambassadors used to be people who represent the interests of the country to foreign government, people who are extraordinary, passionate and selfless. People who bring solutions, ideas and innovations from other countries. Wouldn’t it be such a relief if our house ambassadors are like this?

Diary of an Ibadan corper 7

In this episode, another guest author, Anifowose Mariam a fresh Ibadan corper shares some of her experience as a serving Ibadan corper ..

All i wanted was to serve my country, but I was disappointed when I didn’t go with the stream 1 . To make matters worse stream 2 couldn’t go to camp on the scheduled date due to ‘logistic reasons’ as NYSC had said then.

Eventually June 13 came, I travelled to the NYSC orientation camp at iseyin oyo state. Hmmm, my first experience that day I just won't forget it. I was told to carry my box on my head and walk to the main entrance of the camp. The man o war people didn’t pity my petite stature, thank God I didn’t go with much load. I did as I was instructed, did my registration and collected my kit.

To my greatest surprise I was given a giant sized khaki uniform , to add salt to my injury I was given a jungle boot of size 45 whereas my real size is 36. I ended up swapping with other corp members four times until I eventually ended up with a size 39 which was just manageable.

Everything in camp was regimented starting from the early morning exercise that is always spiced up with lovely music. I always find myself dancing instead of doing exercise. Anyway dancing is a form of exercise.

17days later, I was discharged to my place of primary assignment, ministry of health Ibadan, Ibadan north local government area.
Serving in Ibadan has its sweet funny and bitter experience.

The taxi drivers and okada riders are always ready to swindle corps members, once they see us in khaki. I almost spent all my money on transportation to the local government for cds my first time. Transportation fare of ₦50 I ended up paying ₦150. One has to been very smart with the market women too. They tend to sell their products at exorbitant prices once they see corps member in khaki.

PV signing in Ibadan north local government is another experience worth sharing. For my first PV signing, I got to the LG around 8am in the morning only to end up being number 42 on the list. Was it that some corps members didn’t sleep in their houses? Even at number 42 I still didn’t sign PV that day instead my white t-shirt got stained with brown powder, different shapes and colours of lip stick by other female corps member. To be sincere I think I stained other corps members's t-shirt with my lipstick too. Don’t blame us o, the female corps members in Ibadan north are fashion talented.

Ibadan is really a big city, it has quite a number of tall buildings like cocoa house, shopping malls like shoprite, cinemas , recreational centres like agodi gardens eatries like foodco, tantalizers, dominos pizza , KFC, food companies like sweetco, sumal foods etc. Allawee of 19800 hasn’t given me the opportunity to visit all those places I mentioned.

Ibadan people can be very funny when it comes to pronunciations. Omo Ibadan ki ni so re? there is this word I always hear from the taxi drivers ‘kin cenma’, on one faithful day I told my friend I will like to take a tour around Ibadan we were sitting down in the micra waiting patiently for the micra to get filled up. Suddenly I just heard that word again ‘kin cenma’ I decided to ask my friend where kin cenma is. Oh lord of mercy the driver was trying to pronounce queen cinema!

Pride of London

The rivalry this weekend will wholly prove the long-lasting antagonism between Arsenal and Chelsea. On Saturday at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal and Chelsea fans will be taunting each other when both teams meet this weekend. The first meeting between both teams was in November 1907, a match in which Chelsea FC won; 2-1. The total meeting between them is 187; with Arsenal being victorious in 72 games, drawing 54 games and losing 61 times to Chelsea.

The home supporters (Arsenal fans) are claiming to be the pride of London based on their numbers of trophies and history. Arsenal have won 12 FA cups, 13 league titles, two league cups, 14 FA community shields, and 1 UEFA cup winner’s cup. Their fans are like: “Chelsea, you have no history.” Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger reinvented football. He led his team to an unbeaten season in 2003-04; “The invincible.”

Chelsea believes they are the pride of London, asking Arsenal fans: “Have you won the champions league?” Chelsea have won 7 FA cups, 5 league cups, 4 FA community shields, 1 UEFA champions league, two UEFA cup winner’s cups, 1 UEFA Europa league and 1 UEFA Super cup. Chelsea are the only London team to have won the UEFA champions league.

Chelsea FC bringing in Jose Mourinho in 2004 as their manager, added toxicity between both clubs. It started when Henry of Arsenal scored a free kick while Chelsea’s goal keeper was still arranging his players.

After this, Mourinho has been feeding media with words to strike at Arsenal and their manager, Wenger. There is always an intense-feeling between the players and supporters whenever they meet. The 2007 Carling Cup final is an example: Chelsea’s captain, John Terry was made unconscious after Abou Diaby accidentally kicked him in the face. After Didier Drogba, the higest scoring player in a match between both teams, scored an 84th minute goal, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor and John Mikel Obi were given red cards for fighting. Last season’s first encounter saw Chelsea claim a 2-0 victory against Arsenal. Arsenal were reduced to ten men after Diego Costa pretends led to the sending off of Gabriel.

Later, they got another red card, which reduced them to nine. During that same game, Gary Cahill’s harsh challenge on Alexis Sanchez vexed Wenger. Arsene Wenger and Mourinho were physically involved. Wenger pushes Mourinho on the chest, knocking Mourinho off balance. Wenger and Arsenal fans believe Chelsea are boring and defensive.
Mourinho believes Arsenal’s manager, Wenger, is a “specialist in failure and that Arsenal have a “tradition of crying.” With Mourinho gone, the rivalry between both teams continue. From 1996 till date Arsene Wenger of Arsenal have coached against 13 different managers in charge of Chelsea. With Antonio Conte presently involved as Chelsea’s manager the atmosphere this Saturday won’t be different. The new

Chelsea boss is very tactical and defensively minded. Arsenal fans won’t hesitate to boo their former midfielder, Cesc Fabregas and the player who they dislike most, Diego Costa.

Still no derby has grown like that of these two teams in England. Arsenal and Chelsea match have been competitive over the years, longer than that of Manchester derby. Which team will claim bragging right this weekend? Which team will be the pride of London, Arsenal or Chelsea?

Pretence

Being around people who pretend as much as they breathe lately got me wondering, why do people pretend? Why has it become so rampant? I looked further into what they stood to gain or lose. You will agree with me that pretence is an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true. Pretence is falsification of situations and reality, putting up a false show. Now we all know that nothing good can come out of anything false. So I can say that the disadvantages outweighs the advantages.

In the first place, pretence is a phenomenon which has to do with personality. The personality of the pretender and the one on the receiving end.

The pretender
Most times people pretend to be what they are not because they want to fit into the society, because they want to be accepted or in most cases they want to get over a feeling of low self esteem they have which is as a result of something.

A pretender has everything to hide. Either about situations or about his/her person, hiding who they really are. Having fake relationships, fake friends, unrelaxed nature and way of life isn't left behind. A pretender forgets that by pretending, he/she is alienating his/herself, no one can reach out to a pretender's soul, pretenders engage in covering up their true needs thereby living an unfulfilled life.

The receiving end
As an individual at the receiving end you must ask yourself several questions to ascertain what exactly the situation is. Why should you be deceived? Have you in anyway through your body language shown that you are not a trustworthy or friendly person? Have you been wicked? On the other hand are you a threat to someone or people? Are you being threatened? Are you being envied or ganged up against? Someone pretending around you might actually be a sign that you need to watch your back or watch your ways.

How to stop pretending
Stop trying to please others, learn to say no when you should.

Create your own path and walk in it, do not try to be someoneelse

Do not be selfish, remember the whole world does not revolve around you alone

Pray and ask for help.
