Say NO to violence against women

Here is another article from a guest writer on the blog. I personally felt this needed to be shared here, to join in creating an awareness. Nowadays female molestation and violence has become a trend, making waves and spreading like wildfire.Even kids are being molested, I believe in the cause to rise against violating the female folks. We have a right to our own freedom of movement in the society. Read what Oyindamola has to say...

Violence is no doubt one of the biggest threats to the peaceful co-existence of the human gender; males and females. It has eaten deep into the structure of the society and glaringly, the consequences has proven to be catastrophic as well as posing setbacks for societal growth. Violence is nothing short of a tender subject. From time immemorial, research has shown that a larger percentage women; both young and old are exposed to violence.

It is heartrendingly sad when females suffer at the hands of beasty men. It is now a norm to hear of men beating their wives to the point of being comatose, extreme cases of death has also been recorded. This act has even gone beyond the family unit.

Majority of the female folks anywhere around the world are physically molested. What can be done to put a stop to this evil?

Whoever is the perpetrator of physical violence, whether male relatives or not, should be apprehended and brought to book. Men should be civilised enough to prove their ideals by using their brains not their brawn when they are angered.

Another form of violence females suffer, is sexual exploitation. A closer look at this will show you , that a considerable percentage of the victims of rape and other related crimes are young females; most of whom are not mature enough both physically and mentally to be having sexual intimacy with the opposite sex. Also, verbal abuse should not be overlooked. Issuing threats and badmouthing the female gender is uncalled for as well. Put your brain and the gift of words you have to other honourable tasks. Why should you destabilize a woman's emotions by the hurtful and threatening statements you utter? This is totally barbaric.

Women everywhere in the world are not at total ease. The fear of being sexually exploited, physically assaulted and emotionally threatened has succeeded not only in ruining their lives but also ruling the hearts. Even if domestic violence doesn't happen to them directly, what about their friends and families, daughters, sisters or their co-worker or even someone in their immediate or external environment?

The concept of women being weaker vessels has been totally misunderstood and this has somehow contributed to their undoing and how they are treated in the society by men. In fact, some cultures applaud this as they regard men as gods whose actions can't be questioned.

All forms of violence against women should not only be tackled but measures must be put in place to get it eliminated from the society. Women should not be enslaved, nor forced to do backbreaking work or jobs. They should not be turned into objects that gratify sexual pleasures against their wills. All hands must be on deck to trample on all forms of violence the female community faces. We needn't be pushed before we respond to this clarion call. The aftermath of this vices are clear enough and devastating for all to see. Female victims of violence are not the same anymore after incidence. They become traumatised and this affects all aspects of their lives to the extent that - their output to the growth of the society lowers. Young children who are raised or reared in such societies internalise and view violence as a necessary evil for all women, these future leaders see domestic violence as a fate that cannot be rejected or avoided. The male ones among them believe it is part of their destiny to inflict pains on the ‘weaker vessels’ and they will, without doubt, continue the mandate throughout their existence on the surface of the earth. Any religion which approves violence against women is worthy of extinction and the society should stop downplaying the constitutional rights of a woman. Women should not be seen as "lesser humans".

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an annual event. Let every soul keep sustaining this cry - "Say No to Violence against Women" till it is no more heard of in our land. Let the arms of law be long enough to prosecute the perpetrators of violence against women, be it male or female.

Theoretically and practically, our laws should be no respecter of persons – irrespective of Position or affiliations.
To everyone out there – Let’s protect the weaker vessels. To men - the female gender should not be subjected to your inanities. They are humans as you are and are not by any means lesser. To women - refuse to be the whipping post for anyone's whim. Liberate yourselves, seek for help and speak out whenever you are in pains or you face any threat from any angle. Be your sister's keeper, don't become a perpetrator of violence against that ‘feminist’ which you represent. The Creator didn't intend women to be pummeled, rubbished or dastardised. Our destiny is far greater than that.
Lend your voice and resources to this cause – the elimination of violence against women. It's high time we stood up against all barbaric acts facing the women in our society lest we collapse under the crumbling weight of those beastly acts rampaging our environment.

leadership and liberty forum 2016

So on the 3rd of NOV 2016, Moronfolu Adeniyi sent me the link to the leadership and liberty forum (lalf) 2016. I opened the link and came to realize this particular gathering was really going to make sense. I became more anxious , expectant and excited when I realized I would be taking a session on Time management and leadership (leadership 101). Despite busy schedules and distance barrier, about forty participants and facilitators found their way to Royal green’s guest house Ibara Abeokuta on November 5th, 2016.

African student for liberty organization is an organization I have always respected and being indirectly a part of ,by this I mean I didn’t officially join while in school. Apart from the fact that these organization helps to discover and groom intellectuals. It is an organization comprising of ardent believers of liberty, freedom and leadership. They are a group of achievers who never act limited or limit themselves for no reason.

So as I listened to other speakers after giving my presentation on time management and leadership, I realized I had made a great choice agreeing to be in that event, I also concluded that there is big hope for Nigeria. Meeting young people with so much zeal, passion and intelligence for a course really challenged me and motivated me.

ASFL’s West Africa Regional director who is the host, Moronfolu Adeniyi spoke on ‘Promoting Liberty on African Campuses’. He highlighted some of the gains recorded so far as well as the adjoining challenges in the cause of advancing liberty across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Moronfolu ended by narrating his experience as a student and how he and his team were able to surmount several obstacles from their school management in getting the organization established on their campus. He energized participants to be focused and determined pro-liberty advocates.

Lilian David, Another ASFL Executive Board Member talked extensively on ‘Benchmark of Successful Events/Projects’. To organize successful events, she identified and explained three strategies that student leaders can employ, which are: Coordination, Supervision, and Teamwork. She also shared possible events that can be organized by ASFL leaders, especially on campuses.

Former ASFL Executive Board member, Odunola Oladejo a very vibrant lady and John Aiyede (vice president of  ALSO, University of Ibadan) shared insights on ‘Free Speech and Campus Regulations’. Odunola being a lawyer gave more insight on how free a speech is and when one is beginning to cross one's boundaries.

SFL African Programs Manager, Olumayowa Okediran gave a broad introduction of ASFL to the participants. He explained how governments enact laws to infringe on individual rights and in turn hamper social freedom. He shared his experiences in the liberty movement and informed the participants about the ‘No Nanny Campaign’, a global SFL campaign that is identifying and reproving laws that are infringing on individual rights, and plans to integrate it into subsequent programs of ASFL. Really there are certain laws that are ridiculous in different parts of the countries. Why would the government decide for you where to park your cars on certain days? What to wear on certain days?

Azeez Alamutu spoke on financial discipline and fundraising. He made a statement which I quite agree with, "if you can't manage time, you can't be trusted with money".

I had invited one of my friends (dr Tolu Apampa) specially to the event, it was to be more of a re-union for both of us but alas we actually had to squeeze out time to talk. My point is, my friend and I got so involved in the interesting activities and presentations at the event such that we eventually left the venue later than planned .

LALF 2016 was a success and ASFL needs to be proud of this. The presence of experienced and well travelled personnel coupled with the ideas they shared further proved that these are people ready to matter to their environment. These are people who may never be relegated to the background, people who one way or the other are related to the rising and greatness of Nigeria. My presentation that day inspired even me and that’s what a great gathering does, it creates a good atmosphere for inspirations and ideas. An atmosphere to connect , relate and take opportunities and this is what I appreciate student for liberty (SFL) for.
